This is a very easy recipe to make double (if you have a larger pot) and freezes well or lasts in the fridge for leftovers for a few days. This is a very forgiving recipe – nothing is exact, make it to your liking
Add tomatoe sauce or water to make it thinner, less water to make it thicker
Prep time – 20 minutes or so (takes a bit to brown the meat)
Cook time – let it simmer in a covered pot for 15+ minutes
Put over pasta, rice etc, add a salad or a vegie on the side to round out the meal
Ingredients: Per 1 lb or so of hamburger
1 lb of hamburger (can be beef or pork)
1 medium/large onion
1 garlic clove or garlic powder if you don’t have cloves
fresh mushrooms or canned sliced mushrooms
Chunky tomatoes (large can)
Tomatoe Sauce (1-2 cans)
Tomatoe paste (1-2 small cans)
1-2 Tb ketchup or a half teaspoon of sugar (need a touch of sweet to cut the tartness of the tomatoe sauces – I just squirt in some ketchup)
Seasonings
Season to Taste – be generous with your spices (especially the first three)
Salt
Pepper
Italian Seasoning (primary)
Oregano
Basil
Majoram
Cumin
Instructions
In a frying pan or in the pot you are making your sauce, brown the meat (salt and pepper the meat), chopped up onions, crushed garlic or garlic powder and mushrooms together
Drain off most of the fat
Add tomatoe ingredients (chunky tomatoes, sauce, paste)
Stir well. Add a bit of water to make it thinner to your consistency you like (a cup or two is all you will need)
Add spices – Salt/Pepper/Italian etc. Be generous
Let simmer (not boil) for 15-20 minutes with the pot covered.
Stir occasionally, taste and add spices as needed (Otherwise you will have a big mess as it splatters)While simmering make your pasta, salad or vegies
Enjoy!
